Crowland – Vertical Food Production Facility
A planning application was submitted in early 2018 to build a Vertical Food Production Facility which will seek to grow herbs and salads for sale to supermarkets, restaurants and other customers. The facility will utilise renewable power from an adjacent Biomass CHP Plant and provide a year-round range of salads for sale to the market as an alternative to importing them from around the world. Not only will this reduce the ‘food miles’ which the salads have to travel but the controlled conditions employed will minimize the amount of water required to grow the product range and the time it takes for them to reach the consumer’s plate while maximizing their freshness.
